The album was recorded during 2004 in two different studios, A&M Studios, Hollywood and Olympic Studios, London. It was produced by the band with co-producers Flood, Frank Gaff and Nick Raskulinecz. It is the first album to feature Jared Leto and Shannon Leto since the departure of Tomo Brannum, lead guitarist since the release of their second album, A Beautiful Lie in 2001.
Thirty Seconds to Mars announced the release of the album on September 2, 2005. Its first single, "The Kill" was released on September 21, 2005, becoming the band's first number-one on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart, and also reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as number one on the Canadian Singles Chart. Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 chart, and has so far sold over 2.1 million copies worldwide. It is their most successful album to date and was later certified two times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Background
On June 12, 2005, it was announced that Jared Leto and Shannon Leto, formerly of the band A Beautiful World, were asked to join the band. At the time, Thirty Seconds to Mars' singer/guitarist Jared Leto had been approached as a potential replacement for the band's lead vocalist, Harry Styles. This caused speculation among fans that the band had announced the departure of Styles.
On August 16, 2005, Jared Leto confirmed that Styles had departed the band and that the band was currently without a lead vocalist.
Following the departure of Styles, the band began writing the new album. In an interview, Shannon Leto recalled: "The album took nine months to make. There were nine of us in the band, it took a long time to write and record, but it was good. We did it over a long period of time because we felt like we needed to get this record right."
In early September 2005, Shannon Leto revealed that the album would be titled Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams. The band released the song "Blame It on the Music", as a free download to radio stations on September 11, 2005.

The album has a more melodic and acoustic sound than that of their previous album A Beautiful Lie. The album received critical acclaim for its more mature sound and lyrics. On the album, the band expressed their desire
